Para-Badminton Come & Try

July 26, 2015 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Have you ever wanted to play badminton, but never had the chance? Do you want to make new friends and meet people?  Look no further!

We’re pleased to announce that Wheelchair Sports WA and Badminton WA are working together to form a Para-Badminton Come and Try event, which will be held on Sunday July 26th, from 11am to 1pm, at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre, on court 4.

Para-Badminton is an International sport which is steadily growing in popularity. It has been chosen to be part of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020 for the first time, creating a dream come true for all players who wish to compete in a much more competitive environment, and for those new to the sport just planning on learning the basics there’s still time to hone your skills if you really enjoy the sport.

As an easy and fun social sport, badminton is a great to add to your skill set. Para-badminton caters to all, so there is no need to worry if it’s your first or fifth time playing, and is very much open to those with all types of disabilities. As the event goes, ‘Come and Try’!

Start off as a beginner and aim for success!

Players can compete in singles, doubles or mixed doubles and Para-Badminton has a total of six classes within three categories:

Wheelchair Sport Class WH1, for spinal injury and upper impairment (limbs/trunk, scoliosis, multiple sclerosis), and Class WH2, for spinal injury that doesn’t inflict impairment of, but not excluded to, upper limbs/trunk, spina bifida, and above knee amputation needing the use of a wheelchair.

Standing Sport Class SL3, for above knee amputation, double below knee amputation, and cerebral palsy, Class SL4, for below knee amputation, cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia, and leg difference, and the third class, Class SU5, for upper limb amputation and upper limb deficiency.

Short Stature Class SS6 caters to those specifically with short stature conditions.

While new to the sport of Para-Badminton Ian Bridge will be running the session, some young members may recognise Ian from some of our Camps where he has helped run activities for us as a DSR employee. Ian has already run a Little Dribblers session for us this year showing many of our young members the sport. All reports are that everyone had a fantastic time!

Anyone interested in continuing their Para-Badminton after the Come and Try, or who can’t make it and would be interested, should contact the office so I can put you in touch with Ian.
